I wasn’t feeling very good about the 5k I had done yesterday. My time was slow, and even though in the end I had a huge moment of clarity, I still wasn’t happy that I had regressed so far on my time like I had. Maybe that was in the back of my mind, maybe I wanted a quick shot at redemption on the course, or maybe I just wanted to get this 5k out of the way early, but with the hockey games coming to an end early this afternoon, and nowhere to be until work at 10pm, I took advantage of (what I thought was) sunshine and decided to get #8 out of the way.
It was a really nice day, or so I thought. I had opened up the windows earlier in the afternoon to air out a bit, I was doing some spring cleaning, and the mood struck me, so I figured I might as well get this 5k out of the way. I guess I should have looked at the wind chill, and not just the temp. The temp was in the 30s, and the windows weren’t blowing in any cold air, so I figured this could be my first chance to wear some shorts. 10 minutes into the walk, I decided I made a mistake. Not sure where the wind was coming from, no real big gusts or anything, but when I got home I realized the wind chill was only 27 degrees…maybe thats why I walked so damn fast.
I was 100% intent on not only beating my time from yesterday, but smashing it. I was so unhappy with my time, that I vowed it wasn’t going to happen again. I mixed in a few blocks of running in the first mile, and was happy to see my watch showing 15:31 after mile 1. Faced a little bit of wind on Miller Parkway but kept up a strong, steady walk, and got to mile marker 2 at 31:46…almost 3 minutes faster than my time yesterday. Wasn’t able to add in any more running after that, as my legs were starting to tire from what ended up being a 10 mile weekend, but knew when I hit mile marker 3 at 48:00 I had a chance to be under 50 minutes for only the 3rd time. I hit Beloit Road with a perfect break in traffic and was home free. Had it not been for not wanting to scare 2 children meandering down my street, I probably would have ran the last block, but briskly walked and finished at 49:42…my 3rd fastest time ever. So after yesterday having my 3rd slowest time, today I put down my 3rd fastest time, and feel MUCH better about myself after doing so. I beat my time from yesterday by 5:35!
I will say that I think I was a little bit lucky today. Didn’t get stuck at any lights, or in any traffic, didn’t see a full funeral procession, and that might be partly why I had such a good time, but I’ll take it. Only about 25 seconds off of my fastest 5k to date. I’m happy.
This one has me done for the week through February 25th, so I don’t technically have to do another one until March 3. And with my birthday megasupertripextravaganza coming up, I probably won’t. So, I’ll do a little math and see just how good I’m doing here.
So far in 2012 I’ve done 8 5k’s
2/10 49:18 —Minimum time
2/18 55:17 —Maximum time
Average time: 51:57
Total time: 6:55:36 (7 hours, not bad!)
